The Party
What is "The Party"?
"The Party" is a serious game-prototype which was designed during a university lecture on the implementation of digital games into the classroom. Taking on the role of a journalist who works for an important local newspaper that has been bought by The Party (a fictional political party that has taken over power in the equally fictional country the game is set in), the player will have to decide whether or not he/ she will manipulate the daily news according to The Party's wishes.

"The Party" - an educational game?
Having been created by two Austrian trainee teachers, "The Party" was primarily designed for the use in the history classroom, its aim being to illustrate the media's impact on society and public opinion. Putting the player into the role of a journalist who has decide on whether or not to stay loyal to The Party and will be presented with the immediate consequences of his decisions, "The Party" could, for instance, be used to introduce the topic of propaganda in the history classroom. However, since media manipulaton is a highly relevant topic not only in the study of historical events, it could also be used to introduce the broader topic of media manipulation in a range of other subjects.
